geeks.

"Oh yeah, all kinds of them...everybody seemed to uh, that's right they're just walkin' around doin' nothin', even on their own...play with the children, kid around. Anybody that - thatthe son wasn't ashamed to walk out the way they was, who had a tattoo, or the fat lady and the bareheaded person, or the alligator skin...that wouldn't be odd, they had so many odder things down there.
But that goes out to whatever carnival all over the world, all over the countries. And a lot of freakof natures were put into it. Used to call them "geeks." A "geek" was a person who was an alcoholic or on drugs. And they put 'em in a cage, and he was a wild-man. But they stopped that in the cities and they...but the carnival got traveled in the country...they still had the "geeks." They'd all come pay money to see a man, like an animal in a cage.

But uh, it wasn't done because it was uh uh uh a playground...you see, some for the first time were amazed...and you remember it was part of the sideshow. But today they got so many "geeks" out there...that they're actually running amongst the public, not in a cage where they should be.
They're runnin' in the street amongst us all..."

You think you're god because you have a robe and you can put people up the goddamn river for 20 years? Well you're not.

this week, i had the ultimate pleasure of crossing a big thing off my "things to do before i die" list. and that was seeing godspeed you! black emperor live. i've been listening to them for a while, and they are almost undescribable. droning, post-apocalyptic, intense tracks with no vocals except occasional random audio samples that consist of things like interviews with bums and weirdos on the street.

they haven't played nyc since 2003 i believe. maybe 2002, and for the most part disbanded. they originally announced two new york dates last year and the tickets went on sale on my birthday, last september. got a call from my boy frank that day and said that he got us tickets for both dates. the shows sold out in about an hour and godspeed actually wound up adding 3 more new york shows. and after seeing them wednesday and thursday, i wish i would have gotten tickets for every one of those shows. they will probably never tour again, and seeing them live was such a complete mindfuck. i feel blessed to be a part of that history.

we saw them wednesday night in brooklyn at the brooklyn masonic temple and on saint patricks day at st. paul the apostle church in manhattan:

i've been to the brooklyn masonic temple for shows before, and it's a pretty cool venue. but the church on saint patricks day was one of the most intense things i've ever seen live. it's a huge stone church on columbus between 59th & 60th. the inside is all these huge carved stone arches and stained glass windows. we sat in fucking pews and watched this show.

the band consists of 4 guitar players, a bass player who also plays an upright bass, a violinist, a percussionist and a drummer. during the shows, they are basically shadows with a projection screen backdrop behind them flashing almost-brainwashing images behind the band throughout the entire show.

between the two days, they played a ton of stuff that i wanted to hear, including this track.. rockets fall on rocket falls:

(these videos weren't from the shows i was at, but are from this most recent tour. strangely enough, there were many points during both of those shows where you could look around and not see a single person holding up a camera or a phone to take pictures or video. it was that intense.)

dark serpentines.

...prepared in innocence to meet our king of glory
and so we have this
you have it in your secret windows
and you're understanding to understand it and to bring it forth
it takes minute detail
it takes a holy life
it takes emotions
it takes dedication
it takes dedication
it takes a death
and only god can allow it
and you couldn't do it if you're not the seed of god
and so the path through the great corridors
these are corridors unto his perfection
that is which the prophet and the oarman summoned has penetrated
that through this great sea of blackness
that i penetrated through these corridors
and i went through that last segment
where i went through these dark serpentines
i passed through that corridor
where they sat
where they are
and when you penetrate to the most high god
you will believe you are mad
you will believe you've gone insane
but i tell you if you follow the secret window
and you die to the ego nature
you will penetrate this darkness
oh yes there's many a man or woman
that's been put in the insane asylum
when this has happened to them
and they're sitting there today, people think they're insane
but they saw something that's real
and they see it when they're on drugs
the only thing is they see it
not through the light of god, and the way i show you
i show you to see it through the light of god
and the understanding of god
because when you see the face of god you will die
and there will be nothing left of you
except the god-man, the god-woman
the heavenly man, the heavenly woman
the heavenly child
there will be terror under this day of night
there will be a song of jubilee waiting for your king
there will be nothing you will be looking for in this world
except for your god
this is all a dream
a dream in death

and so i went through that window
and the tower of hell and the great serpentines of the highest order
and i went through that when i showed you chart #3
the question is asked and learned and someone who....

(i have an unhealthy obsession with godspeed you! black emperor. its the musical equivalent of face melting LSD. download and listen. this is a ridiculous live recording of a peel session recorded on november 22, 1998.)

blaise.

Interviewer: Well... Where are you coming from?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: (pause) Well... I don't like the way the country's ran, don't you know, and, erm... that's pretty much what i was expressing in my poem. The government... the American government - they're sneaky, they're very deceitful, they're liars, they're cheats, they're rip-offs. I mean, the American government is one systematic government that...that nobody can trust. I don't trust them myself.

Interviewer: And how long have you been writing for?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Huh?

Interviewer: How long have you been writing for?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Since I was four.

Interviewer: Do you do this sort of thing a lot, like, open-mic kinda questions?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Oh, I love open-mics, I love coming here to do open-mics, absolutely.

Interviewer: What kind of reactions do you usually get?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Usually, people are... are pretty much in agreement with what I'm saying.

Interviewer: We overheard you before talking about... you went to court today for a speeding ticket?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: That's accurate.

Interviewer: right. Do you wanna tell us that story?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Yes, absolutely, I wouldn't mind telling you the story. Erm... I went to court today for a speeding ticket, and I told the judge, erm... "Let me tell you something, and you listen and you listen good, I'm only gonna say this one time and one time only, I don't repeat myself for nobody," I said. I says... "I'm here to pay a speeding ticket, not to listen to your lectures and hear you run your mouth for an hour." I says "I'm here to pay off my speeding ticket ...and I'm here to get my fines out of the way and get the fuck to work." The judge says "You can't talk like that in my courtroom, you're in contempt of court." then I said... I told the judge, "If that's the best you can do, I feel sorry for you." I said "Why don't you just shut your fucking mouth for once and listen." I said "I'm not gonna take any shit." I said "I'm gonna pay my speeding ticket like I said." I walked up to the god damn judge and I hand him my 25 dollars and I says "Here's my money, now I am leaving."
And I left it at that.

Then, before I left, I turned around and told the judge "I'm here to state who I am and be honest with you." I said "If they thought I was dangerous on the road like you're trying to accuse me of, wouldn't they have taken my license when I first got it? Yes they would." And the judge says "Yeah, you have a point," He goes "You don't need to get loud," I said "Don't get loud?" I says "I've got every right to get loud." I says "You can't do a god damn thing about it, because I'm expressing myself in your court, and there is nothing you can do about it. You think you're god because you have a robe and you can put people up the goddamn river for 20 years? Well you're not."
And I left it at that.

Interviewer: Did you walk away?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Yes I did... I don't like the judicial system, I don't like the government system, I don't like the police, I don't like anything to do with this country's government. I just don't like it, because... they're sneaky, like I said - they're deceitful, they're lying, they're cheats, they rip people off. That's the American government for you. America is a third world country, and people don't recognise it... and I think that that's pretty god damn sad, that they don't recognise their own country as a third world, third rate, third class slum.

Interviewer: Well... Do you have any weapons?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Yes, I do. I own a high-powered assault rifle, I own a 12-gauge double barrel shotgun, I own a regular shotgun, I own a regular hunting rifle, I own a 9mm, a 357, a 45 handgun, a 38 special, and, erm... I own an m-16 fully automatic ground assault rifle...

Interviewer: Do you think things are gonna get better before they get worse?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: No way. Things are just gonna get worse and keep on getting worse. Like I said, America's a third world country as it is and... and we're just basically in a hopeless situation as it stands.

Interviewer: What do you think this country's gonna look like in the year 2003?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Y'know, I'll tell you the truth - nothing against you guys, but I don't wanna answer that question because... I haven't even got a mind that's that...that inhumane.

Interviewer: are you ready for what's coming?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Ready as I'll ever be.

Interviewer: Most people aren't.

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: There's a little saying... Dates back for generations...

Interviewer: Go on...

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Be prepared for anything at any time from anybody, don't take no shit, always stand your ground. People wanna come up to me and run their mouth - guess what? I'll throw them through the fucking window... I won't think a thing of it.

Interviewer: Would you mind reciting your poem for us?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Not at all, I don't see why... I don't see why I couldn't.

There's an evil virus that's threatening mankind
It's not state of the art, it's a serious state of the mind
The muggers, the backstabbers, the two faced elite
A menace to society, a social disease
To brainwash the mind is a social disorder
The cynics, the apathy one-upmanship order
Watching beginnings of social decay
Gloating and sneering at life's disarray
Eating away at your own self esteem
Pouncing on every word that you might be saying
To attack someone's mind is a social disorder
The constitution, the government, martial law order
Superficially smiling a shake of the hand
As soon as your back is turned treason is planned
When every good thing's laid to rest
By the governments hate, by the constitution and their lies
And every time you think you're safe
And when you go to turn away
You know they're sharpening all their knives
All in your mind
All in your head
Try to relate it
All in your mind
All in your head
Try to escape it
Without a conscience they destroy
And that's a thing that they enjoy
They're a sickness that's in all of our minds
They want to sink the ship and leave
The way they laugh at you and me
You know it happens all the time
But it only happens in your mind
The rats in the cellar you know who you are...
Or do you?
Watching beginnings of social decay...

Interviewer: Thank you for your time.

whiskey freakout.

thursday night, i had kind of a weird religious experience. and honestly, i feel like i still haven't woken up from that night. i kind of feel like peter from office space after he goes to see that hypnotist. anyways, that night after work, i went to my girl dawn's house, who was kind enough to fix me a huge plate of hot food because she's fuckin awesome like that. a few people came by, and from there we proceeded to finish a huge bottle of southern comfort and some beers. once the soco was done, we moved on to jack daniels. me, being the alcoholic that i am, found myself still awake in a house full of passed out drunk people at 5am, but yet i continued to sit in her kitchen and drink jack by myself.

for whatever reason, i put on godspeed you! black emperor, who i've blogged about a few times before. but it was this one song in specific. it's called sleep, and you can download it here. just right-click and save that shit. and listen to it. it's about 23 minutes long, but well worth the listen. these dudes write like epic, saga-type songs. almost like modern day operas. there are like 9 or 10 people in the band. violins, guitars, drums. so much shit. so amazing. if that link ever goes dead, hit me up and i'll get you a copy of the song.

ok so to me, this song is one of the most depressing songs ever made. i don't know what possessed me to put it on at 6am with a bottle of whiskey in my hands, but that's neither here nor there. anyway, one of my last memories was sitting in this kitchen, drinking, listening to this ultra-depressing song, and i just started thinking about all kinds of shit. old friends, old times and places, dead friends, dead relatives, childhood memories, shitty ex-girlfriends, my 16 year old dog who is probably going to die soon, my parents getting old. just a real volatile cocktail of shit spinning around my head at a million miles an hour. these thoughts, the inhuman amounts of alcohol in my blood, the song.. i'm not sure what snapped, but all that i knew was that i needed to be driving fast with the radio loud and the windows open with the cold air blasting me in the face. so that's what i did.

i vaguely remember any details of driving. i just know at this point people were out and about, probably heading to work (it was like 6:30-7am), and i was speeding around drunk out of my god damn mind on the verge of a mental breakdown. somehow, i made it home. i slept until almost 7pm the next day. i don't think i've ever slept that late in my life. i woke up and sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the wall for almost an hour. i got up, showered and went out, swearing i wasn't going to drink. but of course, i met up with carson and she always has a bottle of jack daniels handy, so the whole 'not-drinking' thing went right down the tubes. shit.

so we went over to halligan's in west orange because division east was throwing a video premier for the new alien workshop video called mind field. i have to say, it's one of the sickest skateboard videos i've seen in a long time. definitely worth owning. (available now at division east, by the way haha). anwyay, the skating is just ridiculous. the soundtrack is insane. the production was so, so amazing. so well put together. one of the dudes (josh kalis i think) actually skates to a bullymouth song that was put out by division east records, but those fucks didn't put shit about DE in the credits. but i digress.

i said my hellos when i got there and bullshitted with everyone for a while. but it didn't even seem real. i remember shape bought us a round of car bombs, and that got me a little wacky. but by a certain point, i pretty much sat in the corner of this bar drinking beers and barely talking to anyone. it was weird, i just felt like i was drugged or something. i was just in a constant daze, but i was focused on the video. i watched it twice in its entirety. i have to say, my friend carson really has a heart of gold. she knew i had some shit going on and she pretty much didn't leave my side for the whole night. thanks mi amor. after halligan's we stopped at the midland house to smoke a blunt. then i went home and passed out, but i still never felt like i ever woke up.

i kinda had another mini-freakout last night, but i think that might have been tequila-induced (thanks dawn haha). but yeah, i left the bar and didn't say anything to anyone and then i sent out some kinda nasty/sarcastic text messages which i feel really badly about. i don't know, it was kind of a blur, as was my drive home. i should probably stop doing that, as i'm pending trial for a felony right now. but i got home and to my surprise, there was a massive bottle of absinthe in my house. awesome. so, of course, i drank it until i fell over. literally. on my kitchen floor. then i went in my room and put on the most depressing song in the world. yeah, you guessed it. sleep by godspeed you! black emperor. then i passed out.

in my daze this weekend, i did manage to catch a couple flicks. this first one pretty much sums it up. that's the 'lights are on, but no one's home' look.

oh man.

today, i saw something that a friend of mine posted on facebook about seeing the rocket from astroland being carted away from coney island on a flatbed truck. its such a travesty to see a true piece of american history being dismantled. i know my grandparents lived in brooklyn for a while, and went to coney island. sad to know it's on its way out, and probably being replaced by some corporate, modern monstrosity.

anyway, just the word coney island always reminds me of this one song from godspeed you! black emperor. its called "they don't sleep anymore on the beach". so depressing, so good. i can't stress enough how good this band is. i guess you could label it as "post-rock", although i truly hate genre labeling. but they are just on some insane shit. lots of reverb and obscure samples wonderfully laid over epic instrumental tracks. real genius shit.

ok so, back to the point. so i youtube this song to see if they had a video. and there's no offical video from the band, but i stumbled onto this series of experimental video documentaries with this song set to the background. granted, the song is like 24 minutes long or something, so the videos are split up into four parts. the only thing i can figure out is that they were made by some dude name jorge desoto in spain and he is 33 years old. other than that, i couldn't find any info. but what an awesome interpretation of the music. simple but powerful.

watch these videos in succession, and pay attention to the vocals in the very beginning of the first part. they are the only vocals in the song, and they are by far one of the most depressing things that i've ever heard. enjoy.

lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven.

godspeed you black emperor is one of the best shitfaced drunk at 4:55 am on a wednesday night bands of all time. if you're not into them get into them. seriously i can't even type the words to accurately describe the level of instrumental genius that these dudes put out. they don't sleep anymore on the beach. so ridiculous and so utterly depressing. makes so much sense. someone get these internets away from me. fuck.
